Core Assets Children’s Services was commissioned by the Council for Disabled Children to deliver Independent Support to young people and their families in partnership with local Information, advice and Support services (IASS), previously known as Parent Partnership Services (PPS), Local Authorities, and Parent Carer Forums (PCF).
Whilst we are still accepting referrals and attending group activities, please be aware that the Core Assets Independent Support Programme will be closing on the 31st July 2018. Independent Support was always intended to be a time limited resource, supporting the transition from statements to EHCPs. From August 2018 onwards, parents, children and young people will continue to be able to access information, advice and support on statutory assessment and annual reviews from your local SEND IASS.
What is Independent Support?
The Children and Families Act 2014 has introduced measures on special education needs and disabilities (SEN/D). From September 2014, these will be used to reform the SEN/D system. Under the act, local authorities have a duty to introduce the new Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans and publicise a Local Offer of the services and activities that are available to parents, carers and young people.
Independent Supporters within each local authority will assist parents and young people through the EHC planning process. As one of these Independent Supporters, we will be working in 22 local authorities across the UK to provide parents, carers and children with the impartial information, help and support they need to progress through the new SEN/D assessment and planning process.
